Kitui Diocese

We wish you all the best in your catechetical ministry.   The young are called; the elderly are called. There is no retirement from the Christian pilgrimage. …... Women are called and men are called….. God 'has no favourites' …. We are all called no matter what our occupations may be. There is no special status in the Kingdom for those in 'top jobs' or 'important responsibilities'.

Youth and PMS

YOUTH
The Diocesan youth Chaplain is Rev. Fr. Edward Mulwa. He is supported by coordinators for youth out-of- school and Youth-in-school, as well as junior youth coordinator. He also Coordinates the Youth ministry (in/ Out of school) e.g. Charity days; Workshops; festivals; ballgames etc. The youth in our diocese are categorized under: Out of school (Senior and Junior)& In School. (Young Christian Students)
All of them have their own Coordinators. The youth programme in the diocese is designed to help young people get an all-round formation as they grow up.
Senior Youth
For the senior Youth, faith is celebrated through various programmes. These programmes are meant to target various aspects of young people, including, Spiritual/ mental formation, Social/ communal project and Income generating projects
The activities to celebrate this faith include:
  • Workshops/ Seminars (usually one week long at specified times)
  • Youth rallies/ Mass (one full day)
  • Talks (in parishes/ schools)
  • Exposure Programmes (within and without the diocese, locally and Overseas)
  • Retreats/ Recollections
  • Music/Drama festivals
  • Ballgames competitions
  • Participation in Liturgical celebrations
  • Evaluation/ Planning meeting (from station (School); Zone; Parish; Diocese; National Offices)
Junior Youth
For the junior youth; faith is focused on preparing the young boys and girls for growth of faith. This is done via various activities such as Sunday schools; offertory dancing; mass serving (for altar boys); junior youth music/ Drama/ ball games.
Youth programmes
Due to the fact that most of the youth members are at home during the vacations (after closing schools in April, August and December) there are various activities planned in the diocese for them.

In April, it is time for balls games, where out-station teams meet at the parish level to play against one another, selecting teams to represent that parish at deanery level, who in turn select their teams to compete at the diocesan level.
Normally, the ball games involved include football (soccer); handball; netball and volleyball. A parish or deanery may include other ball games it deems fit and entertaining. A part from handball (for boys) and net ball (For girls only), other games are represented by both boys and girls teams.

In August, the diocese holds music festival, where choirs from outstations, after competing at the parish level are selected to represent that parish during the diocesan competitions.

During these festivals, these choirs present various articles composed from the given themes by the diocese (or national office, in the case of the National class). The melodies include own original compositions, adaptations of the existing melodies, set pieces, and traditional sacred dances and folksongs. In these festivals, the junior and senior youth articles may be held in the same or different days. Though the festival is under youth programmes, it has drawn wide interest from adults who have joined the choirs
In December, the youth programme has drama festivals, where articles including stage production, poems (in English, Kiswahili or Kamba language) and choral verse speaking are staged, both for junior and senior youth. The Class entries remain the same as in Music festivals.

Apart from these physical programmes, the youth have other programmes that focus on behavioral change; Income generating; vocational discerning; Liturgical participation/ Music; recreational activities such as ball games; Drama; Exposure (within and without the diocese); Leadership skills; spiritual formation (Retreats/ recollections/ catechesis) etc. These are the activities that are held through workshops, rallies and recollections, Youth Masses, exposure visits, evaluation meetings et cetera.

PONTIFICAL MISSIONARY SOCIETY
The PMS has the four universal Missionary Societies under the patronage of the Holy Father. Their principle aim is to promote missionary zeal among the people of God. The four societies are:
  1. Society for the propagation of faith (World mission Sunday, celebrated on 20th October every year.)
  2. Society of St. Peter (Vocation Sunday, celebrated on 21st April every year)
  3. Society of Missionary Union (union of prayer for missions)
  4. Society of Missionary Childhood (Epiphany celebrated 6th January every year)
The societies inform the people of God about life and the needs of universal mission of the church. They serve as channels through which the faithful can reach out and participate in the work of evangelization. The particular churches are encouraged to pray for one another and to support through exchange of personnel and material resource s.

In the diocese o Kitui, the four societies are celebrated each year but more intensely the Holy childhood which has penetrated in all the corners of the diocese, all the parishes are aware about the PMC even where enrollment has not taken place.

THE PMC PROJECTS
The society of the Missionary childhood (Santa Infantia) has funded Diocese of Kitui a good number of projects in the past four years. Most of the have been implemented; last year (2012) they funded us the following projects

  1. School fees for St. John Edues

  2. Primary Premium Programme

  3. Liturgical programs

  4. Water tanks

  5. Desk for primary schools

Other programmes are

  1. Wheel chairs (16pieces)

  2. Hearing aid for St. Michael school for the deaf pupils)

  3. Classroom in different parishes in the past years

  4. Construction/renovation of the dormitories.

PMC DICOESAN MASS
It was held on 6th April 2013 at our Lady of Africa Cathedral. Approximately 6000 kids attended.
 
PMU
The diocese has fourteen new registered members of the Pontifical Missionary Union; who have displayed some seriousness in prayer.

ST. PETER THE APOSTLE
The diocese celebrates this society annually, every fourth Sunday of Easter. We have 24 seminarians in the diocese, two deacons and seventy six priests (this include two missionaries)
